Hey fashionistas,
We are back and have thoroughly celebrated the summer season of 2015! We did
some digging on what were your favourite trends, colours and looks for this
years summer season and we think we’ve hit the nail on the head with this years
SUMMERDAZE shoot. We played around a lot with the models and decided the main
aim in terms of photography and direction would be show casing the beauty in
the fun of colour us girls enjoy having during the summer season. We may
surprise some of you with the bold fashion statements with colours, styles and
make up that we tried with this shoot but as we will soon be leaving the
Fashion Tab this year, we aim to have us much fun creatively as possible. A
tremendous thank you to every model, stylist and member of the RETRO committee
that helped make this shoot such a success.
As fellow
fashionistas that are looking out for nothing but your best interests we hope
you take from this photo shoot that Summer is essentially a comfortable season
where you should dress in a way that is free flowing to your personality. Don’t
be uncomfortable (especially in Summer heat), be YOU. Because YOU ARE
FASHIONABLE.

Our beautiful model
Estine turned out to be the face of this year’s SUMMERDAZE shoot showing the
true essence of summer in her playfulness with colours like pink, the
spontaneity we feel one should have when dressing in summer shown in the
folwers in her natural hair. She smiled, laughed and danced and showed the fun
and love for summer weather we should have. This is a simple and perfect outfit
in that it has a pop of colour with a lace top that can be dressed up or down.
This outfit is perfect for any summery occasion.
So we played around
a bit with dark colours and defied the stereotype of summer being the
equivalent to light, bright colours. We had fun with this dark lace dress,
spinning and twirling around you can see this dress has a bit of a puff to give
a fun element to your look. The lace makes it suitable for night time and the
cap sleeve ensures its not too formal.
We had fun styling
Kelly as we thought of something outside the usual summer skirt or jumpsuit, we
decided for a darker colour paired with a summer accessory to brighten the mood
of the outfit. We chose this fun black skirt piece that showed a bit of leg as
needed on any hot summer day and then paired the outfit with a simple shite
shirt and a hat for a simple playful effect. Hats are an infinite summer trend
that we think should be a part of any girls wardrobe for summer, they are cute
enough to make any outfit look more lively whether you’re wearing black or
yellow!
White is a colour
that will always be in no matter what season of the year, so we decided to play
around with white lace that adds a bit of an elegant touch to a very common
summer colour. We love dresses like these that are loose fitting and have a bit
of a puff around the waist to give your body some shape. When wearing white we
advise you to add a pop of colour either in accessories, shoes or like we did,
on the lip or cheeks. Megan shows a simple red lip that brightens up her outfit
immediately also dressing up the simple dress making the outfit suitable for
afternoon lunches, late suppers or sundowners.
Kimono’s are a big
trend this year that we’ve noticed creeping in with more and more prints, lace
and fringes involved. So we showed off a few different summer colours and
patterns whilst giving you the popular kimono trend. We think this trend will
be around for a long time considering that it can pair perfectly with a lazy
pair of jeans or a formal dress or pants outfit. Kimonos give us a very loose
and relaxed feel so we paired the outfit with simple make up and loose curls
that we see all over during summer time – they give a feel of effortless
perfection around your face and are easy to do, also they save you from bad
hair days in moments!
Dresses are a must
this summer season, whether uou’re going out with friends or having a family
braai. Print or plain we definitely think a dress is a good investment in your summer
closet, especially because they can be paired with just about any hairstyle!
We LOVED denim this
summer and we thought we could get away from the denim jacket and dungaree
phase and go with something different like this denim cross between a dungaree
and skirt paired with a simple white tee. We love how fun this look is, it
reflect summers laid back, casual feel. Not to be too plain we added another
pop of colour to the outfit on the models lips – just you know for those risk
takers!
Like we said, we
LOVE denim. Especially ripped at the knee and paired with RETRO allstars. This
summer look is for those of you who don’t fancy dresses and skirts, nothing is
wrong with being comfortable in a pair of your favourite denims and allstars.
The plaits give it a feminine touch, just in case and the ripped knees are
those of you who are daring enough to show a little bit of edge in your outfit!
For a more formal
look we love long skirts with a bit of sheer difference in them to show off
some of your summer bod. Pairing pastille colours and simple hairdos make for a
perfect summer elegance. Remember less is more!
Possibly one of our
FAVOURITE looks that came out of this photo shoot. Beautiful Estine took Summer
to thought and whilst staring deeply into the distance we paired her with a
simple white shirt (a MUST have item for any season) our favourite pair of
boyfriend jeans and a little pop of colour in a bandana to save anyone from a
stray curl or lock on a bad hair day. This shows that summer isn’t only for
those girls in yellow dresses and tight skirts, summer is a laid back lifestyle
– have fun, do what suits your personality.
Hello
Fashionista’s,
We know
it’s been a while but with RETRO’s recent committee changes we’ve been a bit
busy. And with the recent Fashion Weeks we’ve been hooked on social media
watching the runways for inspiration.
We must
say this year’s Spring Fashion Week looks have taken our breath away! Our
favourite looks of the season came from Dior, Chanel, Hugo Boss and Chloe.
If you
want to see more from Fashion Week checkout www.vogue.co.uk for up to date info from the runway.
South
African fashion bloggers have recently pushed fashion limits with their iconic
street style. Our favourites are Aisha Baker (Baked The Blog) and Aqeelah
Harron (Fashion Breed). These two have taken street style to the next level by
transforming local fashion into outfits that look straight off the runway. Take
a look for yourselves www.bakedtheblog.com and www.fashionbreed.co.za
As for
what we’ve been working on for you guys…
We know
winter has come and gone but who doesn’t love dressing up in their favourite
new and old winter outfits? So we decided to dress up a few Rustybug’s in our
favourite Winter trends.
Our
vision for this shoot was to really highlight new and classic patterns, fabrics
and styles. We chose to focus specifically on Tartan and Mixed Fabrics as we
think these two took winter by storm this year. We of course included the
classics such as Winter Accessories (boots, hats, faux fur, beanies etc) and
Coats into the mix just to show off your favourite timeless looks.
These
looks are easy to pull off and add your own twist to. Don’t be afraid to
experiment with new and old trends, textiles and colours. Use these looks as
merely a guide to transform your own winter wardrobe.
Besides,
with Cape Town’s weather these looks can be adapted to just about everyday.

- We love Ilhaam’s mixed fabric jacket paired with a simple statement necklace to break the dark colours.
- We love Azraa’s mixed fabric combo. The denim shirt, mixed fabric jacket, tan bots really tie this chilled look together. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, add in a single braid!(above)
- We love Megan’s red lips paired with faux fur and high knee socks that gave the outfit a fun twist.
- We love this textured pattern jersey with a simple up do to make the jersey the statement.
- Braids are a timeless hairstyle that simply adds texture to any look, it attracts attention to neck pieces such as this scarf in a subtle way instead of a normal ponytail.
- We love the timeless jersey’s appearance this winter. Dressed up or down it’s an outfit on its own!
- We LOVE Megan in this Mixed Fabric dress. It takes smart-casual to another level completely!
- Spice up your look with hot lips or dark eyes to attract attention to your best feature if your outfit is doing too much of the work.
- We LOVE Maxine in mixed prints and patterns paired with boyfriend jeans not to mention the very “in” easy-to-do Turban style.
- We think that adding a hat, beanie or beret to any outfit simply adds an unexpected colour element and colour combination. It’s a great way to break colours and pull together an average outfit!
Fashion
trends for summer
Summer is fast approaching and this season the trends show our
love for sport and our obsession for unearthly romance. Here is our quick guide to two recent and
upcoming trends.
A current, strong summer trend is “spots luxe.” This trend puts the idea of stylish and
flexible clothing into a fine-detailed gymwear selection which can be worn for
a work-out or outside the gym.
Defined by: vests, T-shirts, cropped tops, shorts, tennis
skirts and track pants. Paired with
wedge sneakers, sweatshirts or bomber jackets.
Key
colours: brights and bold colour blocking. Graphic black and white adds a fresh take on
this trend
Key items: body con dresses, statement handbags and bold
black or white heels
Another hot trend is “ancient ethereal” which features costumes
which defer to ancient royals and warriors. The look suggests gentle romance
and fantasy.
Defined by: long
maxi-dresses with flowing chiffon, with interlacing and braided sections;
detailed, armour-like, geometric jewellery worn with warrior or gladiator
sandals. Floral prints with lace
overlays in pale pastels add a touch of delicacy.
Key
colours: greys,
lilacs, pinks, blues, greens, soft pastels, acidic brights, graphic black and
whites
Key items: soft, printed pants accompanied by chic white
blazers, cropped tops and jewelled sandals
Tip: keep your
make-up neutral and minimal to suit this look
Whether you prefer the bold or romantic style, we can’t wait to
see the outfits you’ll throw together!
